Supporting Europe’s flagship laboratory for life sciences

Colorminium delivered a state of the art Hub for the European Bioinformatics Institute at their impressive campus at Hinxton Cambridge.  Hosting over 200 researchers and providing a Hub for their European research infrastructure for life science data.

An outstanding but geometrically challenging and complex facade design – fully designed and delivered in-house by the team at Colorminium.

The pictures speak for themselves – it really is the “Jewel-in-the-Crown” of the campus.

Berners Street Mock-up

Having been appointed to produce the mock-up on the Berners Street project, we have worked with Putney & Wood alongside the consultant team (Emrys Architects, Blackburbn & Co, Exigere and FMDC) to produce an end result which provides the team a greater reality of the intricate façade detailing prior to the main build.

The end result certainly looks impressive and we are looking forward to seeing this come to life onsite.

Caritas Anchor House – CRASH

It has been a privilege to help out the wider community during these difficult times, especially those in severe need.

In working with main contractor Volker Fitzpatrick, we have helped improve a local facility in Canning Town, Caritas Anchor House for CRASH by replacing some of their windows as a charitable donation.

Testament to a great supply chain in support – D&A Engineering.

A great charity and one which we were only too glad to support.

Rose Court milestone – Start onsite

Great milestone achieved this week at our Rose Court project with works having now commenced onsite.

Having worked closely with BDG Architects, Colliers International and Eckersley O’Callaghan since 2018 and having been involved and engaged under a PCSA since early 2019, it is great to now see the hard work and effort come to fruition.

Through great collaboration with the team, we successfully transformed the design and construction methodology in to a unitised solution which has helped to de-risk the project and bring some overall programme savings.

Now working with main contractor Structuretone we are looking forward to transforming the building over the coming months and it will truly stand out as another landmark there in Southwark

Stay tuned for more progress images as the project progresses.

Works commence onsite at Benenden School

We’re delighted to have just commenced work on site with the new concert hall at Benenden School. This stunning scheme has a highly complex, bespoke auditorium facade, clad in gold feature fins that create a halo around the building. Due to the geometry of the building, the facade has been designed and fully modelled in 3D by our in-house design team from concept at the PCSA stage, through to construction design.

Stay connected for future updates as we carry out the full envelope package. Good work by Grant Shimwell and Daniel Cristolovean.

University of Winchester formally handed over

The University of Winchester’s landmark learning and teaching building at its West Downs Quarter has been formally handed over to the University by main contractor Osborne, just over two years after the groundbreaking ceremony in January 2018.

A truly exceptional and architecturally stunning facade with great enhanced teaching and learning facilities.

Colorminium having been responsible for designing and delivering the entire building envelope, can certainly look back at the exciting yet challenging journey the design and engineering pathway has led to.

From handling over 80-tons of structural and architectural corten to interfacing with a hand-laid flint wall the architecture boasts some of the most unique products but beautifully meshed together to form another leading innovative building for the University.

Visual Mock-up Constructed

Great to see photos of one of our project VMU’s ready for physical & virtual inspection by the client team today. With some of the client team able to travel to our facility in Essex to inspect and some not, Colorminium have now put in place high-resolution remote viewing procedures so as to allow an inspection experience that is as good as being present in person!

Project has a lovely mix of light hand made Petersen brick, Portland stone corbels and some intricate aluminium fabrications to compliment.

Stay tuned as we track this exciting project through the delivery phases on site!

Minories Hotel – Project Update

Cladding works are nearing completion at the first Canopy Hotel by Hilton in the UK – at this fantastic site in Aldgate, London. Colorminium have been able to continue working safely at this project thanks to measures we have put in place and the unusual amount of space available to us in comparison to most other London construction sites.

The façade is a mix of unitised and traditional glazing due to the combined refurbishment and new build elements of the structure. These photos show the “iconic” feature fins, which not only act as shading devices to enhance the performance of the building, but also create a very dynamic appearance to overall façade.

A big well done to the project team and thank you to all our partners as this great project starts coming to a close with areas such as soffits and canopies and ground floor treatments well progressed.

Wadham College – Project Update

Nestled in amongst the beautiful and historic Architecture of Oxford is the new John Wilkin Building. This building is the latest addition to the Oxford University’s masterplan creating an exciting new space for their students to live and network in.

Colorminium have been involved with the project from very early stages and as we near completion of the first phase we’re pleased to be able to share some progress photos with you.

Despite it’s relatively small size in terms of building mass, it’s nonetheless a very intricate piece of work and this is born out by the extent of the design work involved. We thought you may be interested in some of the numbers involved:

  • 1248 different drawings
  • 94 different glass frit patterns
  • 52 samples submitted
  • 300 different types of metal brackets
  • 360 different types of metal flashings

We look forward to sharing further photos of the completed works in due course.

Keep tuned to see the final project images – a truly stunning jewel set within Wadham College.

Project Progress: Canopy hotel by Hilton, Aldgate London

Construction is well underway and nearing completion of the first Canopy hotel by Hilton in the UK, on this prime site in Aldgate, London.

The redevelopment of the site is an important step in the regeneration and expansion of the core fabric of the City of London eastwards beyond the confines of Aldgate.  With a view to re-structuring the fabric of this area due to its inconsistency both physically and socially, a masterplan has been developed which comprises some new construction alongside utilisation of existing buildings, whilst leaving the adjacent bus station unaffected.

Colorminium was engaged at early project concept stages to help develop an engineered buildable solution which met the various project stakeholders criteria, desires and aspirations.

Tom Bishop, formerly Future 54 commented:  “Colorminium were able to bring together an innovative design solution which satisfied the varying interests of the Project Team.  Through the development of a bespoke unitised design, Colorminium were able to deliver options to enable a fixed price to be agreed within a Cost Ceiling including programme betterment without compromising the Architectural intent.”

The hotel scheme itself is comprised of 3 blocks.  The first two, blocks A and B, have seen the existing façades removed leaving the superstructure remaining, whilst block C is a complete new build.  All 3 blocks have new facades based on an innovative bespoke unitised solution.  A key design aspect is the “iconic” feature fins, which not only act as shading devices to enhance the performance of the building, but also create a very dynamic appearance to contribute to the stunning architecture.

Complex cladding, large canopies and soffits are all other feature areas that challenged the team to ensure they could integrate them seamlessly into the architecture whilst achieving the overall intent.

This project is certainly a “stand out” for all involved.

Well done to the project team and thank you to all our partners as this landmark project concludes in its construction phase.
