The fundamental starting block in a project selection process is to gain an understanding of the client’s drivers behind the development idea.
At this stage we work primarily alongside the architect, together with other members of the consultant team. Combining our knowledge and engineering design skills with those of the consultant team ensures a design specification that is not only feasible and deliverable, but remains true to the original architectural vision.
Our goal is to ensure that we deliver an elegant solution in line, or hopefully even above, our clients expectations. A thorough understanding and an early dialogue allow us to challenge and innovate, pushing our knowledge and creativity in order to formulate outstanding tailored, engineered solutions.
Once initial concepts are agreed on and planning and regulatory decisions fulfilled, our engineering expertise comes to bear.
As the project advances from Stage C-D design, our architectural technicians establish principles from the concepts bringing it together into a buildable design. Areas of risk are assessed and material specifications investigated to ensure that whilst the façade stays unique and iconic in appearance and value, the engineering principles are tried and tested and the client insulated from potential areas of exposure in the wider market – particularly supply chain sourcing.
When the design principles are established and the architect is confident to progress the process, further engagement with the other key consultants is needed to ensure that there is no conflict with the primary structure or M&E strategy for example, and that the baseline performance is carried through into the architectural specification.
The desired outcome at this stage in the process is to give the client confidence that their vision can be taken through to a successful outcome in the most direct and risk-free manner possible.

Running alongside the design and specification stage and working in conjunction with the cost consultant, it is important that both the design and cost are aligned. Using our experience of the market and real-time delivery costs we can accurately advise the client on whether the building can actually be delivered within budget and if not, the process is not too advanced to be able to find a workable solution that safeguards the value of the building.
Industry wide, the largest problem often experienced by client teams is a disparity between conceptual designs and initial budget advice and anticipated entry price versus eventual exit price. This is where the accountability of Colorminium comes to the forefront and the experience we have of bringing designs to the market that are stunning and successful in architectural terms yet functional and commensurate in budget terms is vast.
