Project Scope

  • Bespoke aluminium fins
  • Brick slip cladding
  • Stone cladding
  • Architectural metal work

Located in the Kentish countryside, Benenden is a leading boarding school for girls aspiring for excellence in everything they do. A new 750 seat concert hall and a music hall are being added to the distinctive legacy that already exists, catering for the expanding needs of the community there.

Key Challenges

  • Live school environment.
  • Full envelope wrap including responsibility for the facade performance line.
  • Bespoke fin cladding ‘halo’ design to the music hall.

The Brief

Engaged by the client under a PCSA, Colorminium worked alongside the design team through the advancement of the design stages to to bring to life the reality of the architectural vision. Working from base principles of design, the scope of the early design works included structural design, bespoke fin design, acoustic, thermal and water-tightness design and development of the construction drawings ready for tender.

Our Approach

Working closely with all stakeholders, the PCSA process enabled Colorminium to progress the design alongside the other key interfaces.  A concrete frame building to the school hall required slab infills behind the solid zones, infilled with a conventional glazing system by others.  Brick slips and stone cladding complete the wall build up with bronze anodised features tying the different elements together.

The aspiration for the music hall facade is an inclined bespoke fin design, raking out from the primary structure and turning back over the roof line.  With varying lengths and a changing inclination line, the setting out and modelling of this package was key to give the desired result.  Unique aluminium extrusions with the fixing details designed into the back enable a modular construction reducing site work and ensuring quality on a very complex design.

Now progessing into detailed design with our partners Buxton Contractors, the final design stage is underway with a view to commencing on site in early 2020.

The Result

A stunning design in a prestigious location will complement the exceptional musical talent at the school, providing a state-of-the-art facility for both the performers and audience.  Scheduled for completion in late 2020, we look forward to being involved in this scheme.
