Working alongside Mace, Colorminium were responsible for the design and co-ordination of the complete building envelope. Due to the nature of the contract, the design relied on our engagement and collaboration as we progressed the detailed design and interfacing with the other key trades.
The original buildings were demolished making way for a new six-storey steel framed building comprising of retail at ground floor and basement level and 5 levels of office space above.
At the rear of the building further retail space and restaurant spaces open into a new public courtyard accessed from Pavilion Road.
The main elevation to Sloane Street was designed with a lightweight steel framing system as slab infills, to create glazing apertures. These zones were then infilled with stickwork curtain walling framed with handset stone. To the rear elevation, a similar concept has been developed although the facing material is traditional brickwork.
At level 5, the façade steps back to create a fully glazed box with terrace level. The very complex roof geometry gives the glazing a ‘waved’ appearance that is accentuated by fritting patterns to the glass and integral brise soleil. Due to the complexity of the detailing, a full 3D model was required to successfully complete the design, followed by off-site assembly of various elements for safety checks, prior to installation.
For the restaurant area at the rear of the building, we installed a complex steel structure, which adhered to architectural tolerances and provided the grounding for a bolted glass construction, which is visually stunning. The demanding performance and tolerance specifications were driven by the ARUP consultant team, meaning a complex management of all other trades, which was particularly challenging in this area of the project.
Achieving BREEAM ‘Excellent’, and multiple awards, the completed development is a landmark in the Cadogan Estates portfolio. One of London’s most desirable neighbourhoods to live, work and shop in, Sloane Street has demanded the highest rent values in the UK.
