Situated in a Westminster conservation area with an intricate design, meant we were ideally suited for the project, given our expertise in this area.
Working with contractor Skanska from an early stage we were introduced to the project to take control of the interfacing with the stonework and structure and lead an off-site acoustic and testing programme.
An extraordinary architectural design by Rolfe Judd with double skin façade elements needed careful planning and engineering to ensure the incorporated recessed natural ventilation would actually work. Using an aluminium triple glazed system, the design was successfully worked up and included air cleansing equipment incorporated into the system.
Close interface with the stone mason was also required to ensure continuity of the weathering line where it switched from glazing line to run behind the handset stone. This close collaboration with other trades ran right through the design and site phases ensuring the building was constructed to the required standard.
Other areas of complexity was the treatment at ground floor level which included double storey, single span glass units that required installing out of hours due to road closures. At rooftop level the building stepped back to give a terrace level and provide a glass box with stunning views across London. This was achieved with structural curtain walling incorporating a bespoke brise soleil system.
The project cleverly blends in with surrounding architecture yet maintains its own identity in a striking way. The close attention to the detailing proved successful in translating to a very well designed and constructed building.
