Working with McLaren Construction, our brief was to carry out the detailed design of the full envelope wrap, with responsibility for all façade elements. In collaboration with the design team, particularly structural engineers, the design was completed and we moved straight into procurement, fabrication and installation. With a focus on reducing carbon, the future hotel will retain the existing structure and the best aspects of the existing building whilst transforming the external and internal appearance.
The removal of the existing façade and opening up of the structure is the key interface for the whole package. With the demolition now completed, surveys taken have informed the structural drawings, and design has proceeded rapidly, with the aluminium curtain walling being the primary façade scope.
In solid areas, lightweight steel framing is being used as slab infills, to give a backing to the GRC and aluminium rainscreen.
To terrace areas architectural metalwork including balustrades will be installed to complete the package.
Working within very tight site boundaries, whilst bridging a live road, adds further complexity to the installation methodology.
Scheduled for completion next year, this spectacular hotel will fulfil the clients vision to provide a hotel very close to the places of cultural and tourist interest, as well as giving its customers spectacular views from open air terraces.
