Working with McLaren Construction, our brief was to carry out the detailed design of the full envelope wrap, with responsibility for all façade elements. In collaboration with the design team, particularly the structural engineers, the design was completed, and we moved straight into procurement, production and installation. With a focus on reducing carbon, the future hotel retains the existing structure and the best aspects of the existing building whilst transforming the external and internal appearance.
The removal of the existing façade and opening up of the structure were the key to the whole package.
In solid areas, a lightweight custom-built steel frame was used as slab infills, to give a backing to the GRC and aluminium rainscreens.
In terrace areas, architectural metalwork, including balustrades, was installed to complete the package.
Working within very tight site boundaries, whilst bridging a live road, added further complexity to the installation methodology.
With the project now complete, this spectacular hotel fulfils the client’s vision to provide a hotel very close to the places of cultural and tourist interest, as well as giving its customers spectacular views from open air terraces.
